Tres Lunas Eco Estancia, Uruguay

3 Days +

  • experience a working estancia and traditional gaucho life
  • a variety of options available depending on horse riding level
  • opportunity for lots of wildlife spotting including wild boar, rheas and armadillos

‘Tres Lunas’ was an abandoned 260 hectare farm until in 2005 when it was gradually restored. The location of the farmhouse is idyllic – situated on a hill with stunning views across the rolling countryside, down to a lagoon and the sand dunes at the coast, on the horizon.

Guests staying at ‘Tres Lunas’ can horse ride out daily across the farm and across the neighbouring properties, on a variety of day and half day rides and also ride out with the gauchos helping with the cattle and sheep that graze the property or lending a hand with other farm tasks.

The length and pace of the horseback rides vary as we cross the pastures, ride over the hills and into the forests, traverse marsh and native woodlands and ride through palm groves. The actual rides offered will depend on the time of the year and guests’ abilities and wishes.

Day 1

Early morning departure from Montevideo. Guests are collected from the airport or port or their hotel*. Arrival in time for lunch at the farmhouse. Afternoon ride out on the farm (3hrs) to get to know the horses and tack and marvel at the wide open spaces and gaze across miles of land with no dwellings in sight. Guests can also try the local ‘mate’ that is drunk out of gourds with silver straws, quite a ritual and also partake of the local hooch made from the palm fruit!

Day 2

A full day out horse riding with a gaucho style lunch under the trees and long siesta during the midday heat – the gauchos use their saddles to make a bed, the thick sheepskin saddle pads coming in very handy. Varied pace as we ride across the pastures and along a series of lanes and wide drovers tracks used to herd the cattle across the farmlands and through woodland.

Day 3

Breakfast at the farm and then departure. End of services (see below for transport options). *

Guests can extend their stay on the farm and ride out on a variety of trails. We can discuss options and guests can select the routes that they would like to do.
*Guests can choose to arrive from (and return to) Montevideo by bus- the buses are modern, safe, reliable and punctual. This is an excellent option for those cautious about their budget.
Alternative/additional rides:   Accompany the gauchos checking the cattle and sheep. The animals have to be counted, a search organized to locate any errant animals – sometimes involving a ride across the neighbours’ properties, and any animals treated as necessary. Guests can get some tips on lassoing cattle, for practice the fence posts are far more helpful than animals!  -Ride out of the farm on horseback, and down out of the hills eastwards, towards the coast to an Estancia located on the edge of a lagoon. The route takes guests through forests, across a river, between palm trees and along the herders grassy lanes ending up at a stunning location at the edge of the water. Guests can stay at the Estancia.
Extension: The wetlands area and palm forests of Rocha. An unforgettable extension tour to one of the prettiest areas in the Province of Rocha with outstanding landscape beauty, important ecosystems and a great variety of birds and native scrublands; this area has been declared Natural Animal Reserve since 1996. Please see our Lagoon Estancia Ride for further details.

Tours tailor made, to suite each group, their wishes and riding ability.
