Babaco is a fruit native to Ecuador, specifically the valley of Loja, and is believed to be a naturally occurring hybrid of two other fruits; Toronche and Chamburo. Growing at elevations above 2,000 metres (6,500 ft), Babaco is one of the more cold resistant members of the Carica family. The shrub can grow up to eight meters, and the fruit resembles a narrower papaya (by about 10 cm). It is harvested for both its fruit and juice and successful cultivation in different areas of the globe stretch as far south as New Zealand and as far north as the United Kingdom.
