RIDE ANDES - Thinking of riding in Colombia? - here's what some of our guests have said...

Thanks to our guests who take the time to write to  us about their experiences on our trips.

Here they share some of their thoughts on our new COLOMBIA ride....

"What an amazing experience with Ride Andes, to see parts of Colombia by horseback.
Sally took the time before the trip to find out what kind of horse each guest likes to ride, so
we were well matched with horses that suited our confidence and riding ability - there were
even mules to ride if anyone fancied a change... The riding was very varied throughout the trip … we rode through beautiful coffee plantations, chopped our way through dense jungle, climbing quite steeply at times and were rewarded with views of beautiful hidden waterfalls. On some days there were nice long canters and on others we enjoyed riding into the cobbled streets of whichever village we would be staying in that night. Some of our most beautiful haciendas weren't in towns but were hidden in the countryside and could only be reached by horseback - perfect! We had great local guides, fantastic local food, beautiful horses and stunning haciendas ... What made it even better was how we got to mix with local people in their everyday lives,
whether making pottery, playing the local game of tejo, or just riding to their house to share
a cup of ‘aguapanela’. Overall very well organised, authentic and adventurous trip and one I would highly recommend."
 ANNE

“… The first part we experienced the lush vegetation of the coffee plantations … the second part we rode from hacienda to hacienda to monastery to Villa de Leyva, we saw further evidence of the huge variety of scenery and ecosystems Colombia has to offer. Go soon before everyone discovers it! These holidays are 'full on' - expect to ride at least five hours a day on great horses with competent and friendly local guides, expect three good meals - a variety across the spectrum of good wholesome local food, comfortable accommodation and the chance to see somewhere special from the back of a horse. A variety of local 'experiences' are also included - e.g. lunch at a local pottery and the chance to play ‘tejo’ - the local explosive version of boule! We enjoyed Bogota and went on a city tour Sally arranged for us - we found the people in Colombia genuinely friendly and helpful and really enjoyed and brought home with us one local product - the coffee!”    PAUL & ANITA

RIDE ANDES - Colonial Haciendas Ride in Ecuador...

If you'd like to get more of an idea of the type of rides we host, here is a little information from one of our guests Arlene, who rode on our Colonial Haciendas Ride in Ecuador in 2017.

"The Colonial Hacienda ride meets expectations. Riding fit, forward going and well loved horses across scenic countryside and staying at historic haciendas whose list of previous guests includes Frida Kahlo and key figures in Ecuador's colorful past. Sally and the Ride Andes team go out of their way to ensure rider safety and comfort, matching riding ability to the horses and monitoring girths and tack along the ride. Not only a terrific horsewoman, Sally has an encyclopedic knowledge of the history, flora and fauna of Ecuador. I really appreciated the fact that you took the time to respond to all my email queries, the level of detail provided on everything, and your recommendations and booking of the other elements of my trip, [cloud forest], Galapagos and [hot springs], as well as the care and concern you showed after I injured my leg [BEFORE arriving in Ecuador] and I wasn't sure I would be fit to ride in time. The cloud forest lodge was an excellent suggestion, and I had my own guide for the 2 days who was very knowledgeable. The Galapagos boat was also a good suggestion and I ended up with a cabin to myself as there were only 8 people on the boat. The itinerary and food were good and the crew and guide also made the trip worthwhile. … The hot springs was a super finale to the trip, and your driver took good care of me and my luggage."

"What worked for me:
(In no particular order:)
The shorter ride on the first day to acclimatize and get used to the horses and tack.
The local flavours and foods at lunch, right down to the cooked lupins and Ecuadorian chocolate.
Tasty non meat options provided everywhere and the planning that had obviously gone into making this seamless, together with daily checks on what each rider would prefer for various elements of the picnics.
The great riding and wide open spaces of Cotopaxi national park.
Terrific choice of haciendas, packed with history and welcoming owners/hosts with great stories to tell.
Insightful and interesting details of the culture, flora and fauna on the ride.
Lunch at the rose growing estate and hacienda was a highlight.
The care and attention given to the wellbeing of the horses and the safety of the guests, constant checking of girths and tack, and soundness of the horses. Advice on zig zagging up and down hills, riding with one hand on the reins, help with mounting, dismounting etc.
Excellent fitness/condition of the horses and tack.
The wool and rain ponchos, saddlebags and water provided, all perfect for the conditions.
The McLellan (sp) saddles and sheepskins made for the most comfortable ride ever.
The effort and care that went into matching horses and guests.
I really enjoyed Capuli and the Chagra horse, Apache, was one of the most responsive horses I've ever ridden.
The friendliness and helpfulness of the volunteers, workers and chagras. … always extremely helpful and kind and nothing was too much trouble. … were also very welcoming and helpful, even with the language barrier.
Visiting Otavalo market and the village weaving centre."

The Pantanal of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay is South America's Serengeti: its wetlands are the largest on earth (they're half the size of France) and, in the dry season, crocodiles and storks jostle to gobble the last of the dying fish. Here, the continent's largest cat, the jaguar, lives alongside giant otters, anacondas and the world's largest parrot. A comprehensive introduction to the best place to watch wildlife in South America, and beautifully illustrated throughout, Bradt's Pantanal Wildlife is the only portable book to cover all the main wildlife groups while focussing exclusively on the Pantanal. Bradt's fully illustrated wildlife guides focus on regions of the world particularly celebrated for their amazing and often unique species. With spectacular photography or exclusive water-colour drawings throughout, each visitors' guide provides an introduction to the region's principal flora and fauna alongside suggested wildlife itineraries, practical information on when to go and what to take and photography tips. Written in a deliberately engaging way, they offer something different from dry field guides, and will appeal to the interested layman as much as the wildlife devotee. Ideal as a lightweight companion to any wildlife trip they also make a handsome souvenir.

RIDE ANDES - Argentina Ride Review - a magical experience and BEST STEAK EVER :)

The most memorable meal was in Argentina while camping. It was the best steak I have ever tasted which was cooked on an open fire beside a river running with clear clean water over beautiful pebbles. The steak of course was from a Hereford! ( I work in Hereford and have eaten plenty of steak but this was by far the best).

We were really well fed at all the farms we stayed in - lovely home made bread, jam, butter and cakes. There were always scrambled eggs for breakfast from the farm hens as well as fruit, bread and sometimes yoghurt. Bernadita killed a turkey for us for our evening meal - no food miles there and all home produced.

The most challenging day was may be the day we were travelling to our first night in a house after camping (Argentina). There was a threat of snow in the morning as we set off, but fortunately this didn't materialise and I removed layers as the day went on- like peeling an onion!

We were so warmly greeted when we arrived at Dom and Tammy's farm was idyllic. It was set amongst short pasture on the bend of a river with the mountains all around. Built from logs and with open fires inside I expected Goldilocks and the three bears to appear at any moment.  We had a sumptuous tea with homemade cake and tea in china cups and that was before a delicious evening meal!

A favourite day is very hard to choose there were so many special days. One wonderful day we had in Chile was the day we first swam the horses across a river. I had never done anything like this before and we did it twice that day. The horses seemed to take it all in their stride. They were untacked and taken in pairs to the edge of the river. With a rope on each horse to guide them and a Banquero in the boat with the boatman, they were encouraged into the river. They were really good swimmers and just climbed out the other side and shook off the loose water. Once all horses and riders were across, they were allowed to graze for a short while to stock up on calories before being tacked up again and continuing on. It was a magical experience.

One memorable occassion was when we rode into one of the few villagers on the route. There were a couple of local men in their ponchos who stopped to chat to the guides. Even with my very limited Spanish I realised that the chap I was politely smiling at was looking for a wife! Being happily married for 33 years he was out of luck that day! But perhaps the most memorable moment was swimming at the end of The Universe. The water was REALLY cold but the weather was beautiful. The river was called the Universe and we swam where it met another river, hence being able to swim at the end of the Universe.

The local farms we stayed in were simple but lovely. Their charm came from their simplicity and their beautiful surroundings and the very practical solutions to problems. Rather than tiling the wooden walls around the bath / shower, lino was used which was cut just at the edge of the bath so that the water ran into the bath and not between it and the wall.

Everyone we met gave us such a warm welcome and we had lovely home grown and home cooked food. All had open fires or log burning stoves which were lovely and cosy on a chilly evening.
